Late Hon. D.B.Wijetunga was born on the 15th of February , 1916 to a middle class Sinhala Buddhist family living in the outskirts of the then Udunuwara Parliamentary seat in the Kandy District of the Central Province in Sri Lanka.

He was a student of the St. Andrew's College , Gampola . Being a brilliant student he passed all his examinations with flying colours . On completion of his secondary education ,he joined the Police service in 1939 and served in Borella , Fort and Maradana police stations . He relinquished the police service in 1942 and joined the Cooperative Department as an Inspector and served in this capacity until 1947.

He joined the United National Party in 1947 and commenced his political career as Private Secretary to Hon. A.Ratnayake who was the then Minister of Food , Cooperative and Home Affairs in the D.S. Senanayake cabinet . He entered the Parliament for the first time when he successfully contested the Udunuwara electorate in the general election in 1965 . He lost the Udunuwara electorate in 1970 but returned to Partliament in the 1977 U .N.P. landslide . He was appointed the Cabinet Minister of Information and Broadcasting . During this regime he functioned in various ministerial capacities holding the portfolios of Posts and Telecommunications ,Power , Highways and Agricultural Development .

He served briefly as the Governor of the Western Province in 1988 before returning to parliamentary politics a few months later In the last general election he contested and secured the largest number of votes in the Central Province. Wijetunga was surprisingly appointed Prime Minister by the President , R.Premadasa by overlooking party stalwarts such as Lalith Athulathmudali and Gamini Dissanayake etc. He also held the Ministries of Finance , Labour , and Vocational Training in addition to being the State Minister of Defence in the Premadasa administration . As Prime Minister , he performed the role expected of him by the President to the perfection .
